Why Your Turpentine Comes From Canada Now
Brazil shipped 2,120 tonnes of turpentine into the US in the first seven months of 2025 and fifty kilograms in the same months of 2026. The duty that stopped it was struck down in February, and the tonnes still have not come back.
If you bought imported turpentine in the first half of last year, more than half of it came from Brazil.
2,120 tonnes cleared US customs from Brazil between January and July 2025. In the same seven months of 2026 the figure is 50 kilograms, and that is one shipment (chart below).

The Month It Stopped
Executive Order 14323, signed July 30, 2025, put an additional 40 percent ad valorem on articles of Brazil.
It bites on entries made 12:01 a.m. eastern seven days after the order, which is August 6, 2025.
August 2025 is the first month in the series with no Brazilian turpentine at all.
It is also the smallest month anywhere on that chart. The entire US import book came to 144 tonnes, and every kilo of it was Canadian or Mexican.
Brazil managed 11.7 tonnes in September, 75 kilos in December, 50 kilos in February. That is the complete list for twelve months.
The seven months before the order averaged 302.9 tonnes a month.
